Is training your team part of your solution?

Training is sometimes a ‘go-to’ option to solve a problem around staff capacity or to ensure a level of compliance. Whilst training can bring a number of benefits for your organisation and those being trained, such as helping staff feel valued, building shared understanding, even team building, it comes at a cost and seldom provides the whole of a solution.

When considering whether training is the right option, remember that costs of training are more than what you might pay a training facilitator. When calculating the cost of wages of everyone attending the training event, also think about the opportunity cost (that is, the things that those being trained could be doing if they weren’t in the training event).

Online trainings are a good and economical option if you would like to be able to evidence that your staff have been trained (for example, to show a level of compliance) or staff are particularly time poor (as they can often do other tasks whilst completing the online training). However, if you are hoping that training can contribute to some sort of transformation in the way you operate or truly promote novel approaches or practices, online training is rarely the best option.

If you want to ensure your people gain a depth of understanding and have their questions answered the training needs to allow for interaction. If you expect your people to adapt to meet changing work requirements the training needs to be designed based on your context and the particular requirements of the people in the room and the organisation they are part of. If you are hoping for sustained changes to address risks to quality, the training needs to include experiential learning.
